Jeep Grand Cherokee two-row debuts : Plug-in-hybrid 4xe part of the lineup

Back in January, Jeep uncovered the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee with an “L” added to its name. The “L” pointed to the additional third-row of seats. As promised back then, Jeep has now unveiled the five-seater version of the new Grand Cherokee. It now gets a plug-in-hybrid 4xe version as well, even in the most hardcore Trailhawk variant.

The design is very familiar as it draws from the 7-seater model. The overall length is 11.4 inches shorter than the seven-seater though. The wheelbase also sees a decrease of 5 inches. Despite these reductions, the passenger & cargo space in the new Grand Cherokee is more than that of the L, thanks to the omission of the third-row of seats.

The 2022 Grand Cherokee is offered in seven trim levels. Starting from the base Laredo, the range goes all the way to the opulent Summit Reserve trim. The fully loaded trim is filled to the brim with luxuries. The long list includes Palermo leather upholstery, and a 19-speaker McIntosh Sound system, rated at 950-watts.

If off-road chops are what you want, Trailhawk trim will be the right fit for you. This comes with a Quadra-Lift air suspension system with 28.7 centimeters of ground clearance. Jeep has also thrown in the Quadra-Drive II active transfer case along with an electronically-controlled limited-slip rear differential. You can also disconnect the sway bar if you need some crazy articulation.

The other tech inside the new Grand Cherokee includes 10.1-inch screens for the DIS and infotainment display. Additionally, customers get a 10-inch heads-up display as well as a 10.25-inch screen for the passenger. Rear passengers get an entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV functionality built-in so that they can stream content from Amazon Prime.

This new Jeep is loaded with safety tech including active braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, rear cross alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist and more. Optional extras include a night vision camera, drowsy driver detection, and intersection collision assist.

Powering this new Jeep is the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with 293 hp and 348 Nm in the lower trims. An upgrade is offered in the form of a 5.7-litre V8 with 357 hp and 528 Nm. The 4xe plug-in-hybrid powertrain is available in Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trims. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with electric power for a combined output of 375 hp and 637 Nm. The 17-kWh battery pack offers an electric-only range of 40 km.
