First drive: 2022 Volkswagen Teramont Highline in the UAE

Given all the historically significant nameplates in VW’s stable, the Teramont is a relatively new addition to the Volkswagen family, and their largest SUV model. Known as Atlas in the United States where it is built and manufactured, this vehicle originally debuted in 2018. Unmistakably sharing DNA with the Volkswagen family, both in terms of style and mechanicals, seems odd that it took so long for VW to jump into this segment.

Infiniti recently invited us to try out the 2013 QX56 at a media event. We were more than familiar with the QX56’s capabilities on the road, thanks to the long-termer we had in 2011. We didn’t explore its off-roading credentials at the time beyond mountain-driving, but since it is a reskinned Nissan Patrol after all, Infiniti wanted us to do more with it this time around.

As I’m flying over Dubai and Sharjah towards Ras Al Khaimah in a Bell 412 crammed in with 13 other people, I am thinking that helicopter travel isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. The flight is noisy, tight and industrial, completely at odds with the “luxury” experience we were supposed to be having. But damn is it quick. We reached our destination in only 20 minutes, landing at the Banyan Tree resort at the northern tip of the Emirates, having enjoyed a great view and not feeling fatigued at all for the 2013 Lexus LS launch event.
