2009 Nissan Maxima exposed early

The 2009 Nissan Maxima is soon going to debut at the 2008 New York Auto Show this week, but here are some early photos of the car, leaked onto the internet as usual. Let’s see the print magazines play catch-up with us.

2009-2010-nissan-maxima-2.jpg

Details are still unknown, but it will of course have a version of the V6 that powers other Nissan and Infiniti products.

2009-2010-nissan-maxima-3.jpg

Nissan used to call the Maxima a “four-door-sports-car” back in the 1980s, when it actually was a sporting rear-wheel-drive family car. This latest version is front-wheel-drive and based on the Altima, but with more aggressive styling, a more upscale interior, and most probably a sportier suspension tune.

Who knows, this car might actually come to the GCC finally and replace the decade-old model that refuses to die here for some reason.

Update: The 2009 Nissan Maxima comes with a standard 3.5-litre V6 with 290 hp and 353 Nm of torque, mated to a CVT transmission and front-wheel-drive.

What do you think?

  1. lets hope its going to come here for more choices to choose from.
from inside its infiniti Fx 50 …the material and the wood trim is perfect from the looks…the back is nice but from the front end the altima looks better…

  2. the previous maxima(US Spec) was amazing…….but GCC dealers brought out d classic maxima for d over excited arabs……dunno about this…the bonnet luks like it is been derived from infinity G35 sedan ……

  3. hey mash whatver i am readin in autoblog.com within few hrs i see it in ur site….

  4. daaaa 😕

  5. definitely exciting and absolutly NISSAN!

  6. very very good-looking 😀 looks more infiniti than nissan to me 😀

  7. man…this car even has an advanced cvtec system that controls the exhaust valves also, and they are saying the cvt system is the best among all the cvt transmissions in every car..it has also paddle shifter like F1 car…if they are gona bring the car here with all these features..”the dealer till now is bringing all the new models with almost all the features that come in the USA version”…we will return the altima and replace it with this one 😉

  8. haha paddle shifters in a car wid CVT? for what purpose? 😆

  9. CB: whats the problem with the peddle shifter in the CVT 😕
its the same as the paddle shifter in the automatic transmission.
you see..the tiptronic in the altima is not that fast in response…so they made it faster in the maxima to make it more sporty 🙂

  10. the nice thing is that there are 4 cars in nissan and infinti that has this paddle shifter G37,G35,the new fx,and now the maxima….wait wait people…next time it will be in the sunny….there is a v-spec version for the sunny n the usa market, but its called SENTRA…
    CB you have the FX???am i right?? 😆 😆

  11. yes but the maxima has a CVT. why wud u need to shift gears in a CVT? the other cars u mentioned are not CVT 😆

  12. yeah i have an FX and it does not come wid CVT 😆

  13. and why we dont want to have tiptronic shifter with the CVT. we have the altima CVT and when i want to play with it alittle bit  i use the tiptronic…and this is a good thing. actually the maxima will have 4 types of shifting and one of them will be the ‘DS’ mod. which is not available in the altima tiptronic. just wait and we will see if it is good to have tiptronic in the maxima. the murano has CVT and it has tiptronic mood, the altima, the qashqai both have the same thing..and the maxima have the tiptronic but instead of using the stick you can use the paddle shifter. why not??????? 😯

  14. in a CVT the rpm stays at the optimum range once u accelerate hard, so why wud u wanna shift gears? 😕 CVTs dont have any gears to begin with 😕 so what exactly are u shifting? its just simulating gear changes. i wud rather remove the paddle shifters or tiptronic n lower the cost of the car than have something that is unnecessary. correct me if im wrong.

  15. “so why wud u wanna shift gears? CVTs dont have any gears to begin with so what exactly are u shifting?”
i did not get what you mean….but of course with the CVT, we are not talking about gears…here we are talking about different speed ratios between the input and the output shafts… and the CVT is just about changing the ratios according to the engine input and when you have the CVT you dont have the ability to choose which speed ratio you want and when you hard acc. you have passed by many gear ratios that you dont know their values…but when you want to have the ability to control the transmission as what you have in the infiniti cars’for example’ you have to change it to the tiptronic…in the tiptronic the transmission is programmed to have 6 constant speed ratios as if you are driving an auto car, but you are controlling those 6 speeds..its just about giving another choise for those who are not used to drive with the CVT mood. and if what you are saying is true 😉 then they even have to cancel the idea of the tiptronic from the roots…why do i need to use the tiptronic if the car can use the known auto trans. to change the gears???? (((((its just about giving people another options and abilities to have FUN))))). but again in the case of maxima…the CVT there is not the same as the CVT in any another car even the options their are more than what you find in infiniti cars…
BTW: for mash..one of my friends told me if you change the trans. to the tiptronic but you didnt shift up or down the car will switch to Sport mood. is that true????(i.e the car will change when the RPM reaches the red line in every gear ratio)

  16. i think in a CVT engine when you are accelerating hard the rpm stays constant at its sweet spot. i still do not understand why one would need a tiptronic when you are already in the optimum rpm range 😕 infact by shifting you might be moving away from the optimum rpm which would make the car accelerate comparatively slower.
why are u comparing the infiniti transmission wid a CVT? 😕 the infinitis have a normal mechanical transmission in which case the tiptronic is useful because it gives u control over when to shift. but in a car wid a CVT, the rpm stays constantly at it’s optimum rpm right? so why would you want to shift away from that using a tiptronic? 😕 maybe the answer to that is what you said, “its just about giving another choise for those who are not used to drive with the CVT mood”. in which case i wud prefer it without such fake gear change simulations which isn’t really making the car accelerate any faster. infact slower most probably. 😆

  17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlWYTnaDnK0

thats the 2007 altima 3.5 accelerating. notice how the CVT keeps the rpm constant at its optimum range/value. if the car is already at this optimum range, what can a person do with a tiptronic in such CVT cars to improve its performance is what im confused about.

  18. Author

Different cars behave differently. Lexus doesn’t shift by itself and bounce off the rev limiter. Peugeots shift before you even think of shifting.

  19. man….you are right…i got your point..its known theoretically that the CVT is better than the auto and even the manual trans. but because of the speed of response the manual beats it in reality. but till now there is no one who proved that the cvt accelerates faster than the tiptronic’lets say for example the altima’ . all of this even the video that you are attaching is just as you said if am giving it a full kick down….OK…now the main point if i want to increase my speed very fast without giving it full throttle do i have to wait till the rpm reaches its max point or just by shifting it down 2 or 3 speed i can reach the max rpm and the responce will be faster’in this way i have two choises even the hard throttling or shifting down’….ALSO you forgot a very important point….which is engine breaking. in some bad situations when you want to slow down in a shocking way you can use the transmission to do that..actually i use it some times in bad situations..my friend he has audi and he used it infront of me to slowdown the car. man there is no system in a car that is added just to let the company loose some money. actually if the car was without tiptronic…nobody is gona like it…for example the AC system (if we have the auto mood in the ac where we dont have to increase or decrese the speed of the fan by ourselves…then why they are adding a controller for the speed of the fan if the auto can control it by itself 😉 ) there is a saying in arabic that says ‘you want feel the importance of something until you lose it’ you dont have the cvt trans. in your car but i have the car and the trans. really the trans. without the tiptronic will be sick 😆 …i use it too much for fuun and to rev the engine to high rpm while am driving at speeds of 60 without giving it a full throttle. i hope you understood my point.

  20. oh…btw: am a huge fan of nissan and infiniti cars and if am going to offend infiniti that means am offending nissan cars…my brother is thinking of buying the QX and my sister will buy in summer the G35 so both infiniti and nissan cars have changed alot from before…lets see what will happen with the other compititors 😉
sorry for writing too much but maybe it will help other people who are reading’with all our respect to the editor mash

  21. CB this is another video with the manual mood (tiptronic) actually it makes you feel that you are the boss here 😆 😆
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R938EJBNmiI&feature=related
if you noticed he started 7sec and he reached the speed of 160 at the 22secs (around 15 seconds) the other video that you posted needed 29 sec. to reach a speed of around 200…maybe the driver affected too much but not that far 😉

  22. if you want to increase speed very fast without full throttle yes you can use the tiptronic to shift down and make the rpm reach its sweet spot. but isnt that the same thing as giving it full throttle? since cvts have no gears. why pay extra for tiptronic when you can just press the accelerator a bit more? 😆
yes engine braking is a good point and is useful too. so thats 1 advantage of having a tiptronic in a car with a CVT.
what do u mean manual cars are better in response than CVT? 😕 the manual drive will be losing time shifting gears while during tht time the CVT will still be accelerating. if its the same car with the same power etc, the CVT car will always be faster.
and who is insulting infiniti??? 😕 i own an infiniti myself remember 😆

  23. haha man check both the videos and u’ll see the video u posted has the guy launching the car while in the video i posted he didnt. which explains the faster time. also see how when he shifts the rpm is going lower than the optimum value. so u think a car that stays constantly at its optimum rpm is slower that a car that keeps moving away from it after every shift? 😆

  24. ‘u’ll see the video u posted has the guy launching the car while in the video i posted he didnt.’
man…they both started from the 2000 rpm they both lunched their cars 😯 😯

  25. one of my comments didnt appear what wrong 😡

  26. ‘why pay extra for tiptronic when you can just press the accelerator a bit more’
man..abit more, no way you have to shift down to reach the max rpm.
in general. i think the tiptronic will let you have more control when you want. and manual trans. is faster than the cvt when we have same cars in reality, i dont remeber where i read it..maybe in how stuff work website. and i wanted to tell you that infiniti cars are the best and am sure they will rule in the future just give them sometime

  27. ‘also see how when he shifts the rpm is going lower than the optimum value’ in all his shifts, the lowest rpm was 6000, and from nissanUSA, the optimum value for the max Hp is at 6000 rpm. which means he was still in the optimum range
    yalla man go and sleep
tomrw is aljoma’a and i have to be prepared, good night all 😆 😆

  28. man why do u post so many times? post 1 msg not 4 msgs to say something. 😆
the guy in the video u posted launched the car way better thn in the one i posted. heard the wheel spin?
what do u mean he is still in optimum rpm? lol see your own video before you post it. 😆 you can clearly see him dropping down to 5.5K after the 1st shift and to 5K after the 2nd. i think it’s you who needs to sleep 😆
heres a link that compares theoritically the advantage of a CVT over a manual transmission in the same type of car.
    http://cvt.com.sapo.pt/performances/performances.htm
    enjoy your sleep 😆

  29. man…you are right and i thought you was talking about the RPM when the driver shifts(thats why i said it was still in the optimum range). and the thing that you meant is called the shift shock…you are right. this is the problem that you see in the auto trans. that the CVT solved…but still with those small shocks the tiptronic makes every thing different.
and about which one of them is better ‘manual or auto or CVT’..i will not say you are right only…i read those things before they even launch the car here..and i said it before many times in different articles(((((theoretically)))) between 4 brackets, the the CVT is better than the manual and the auto comes last…but in real cases and (experimintally) the manual beats the CVT and the auto…i saw this article and i think the link was in howstuffwork website, even they teach you how to calculate the timings as i remember 😛

  30. we will not have the maxima 2009 because altima is already present in ME, so they cannont take 2 cars in same boats. It will be then altima VS maxima?????????

  31. they are going to bring the maxima here for sure but just wait…man the differences between the two cars are much, and the price will be abit high….if you are a member in nissan-arabia website…you will notice that there is another version they are building it in japan (looks like the concept intima) people are saying this might be the GCC version…lets just wait….

  32. mohamad u changed your name from thatsit to thatit? 😆

anywayz have u tried drag racing with a friend in a similar car? u have a CVT altima i believe. one of u shud try using tiptronic n other should have it in auto. want to know who will be quicker.

  33. man…we have 3 laptops in our home, so every time i write my name, i forget something, so it depends…the problem is that i dont know anyone of my friends who have the same car…but i will try in the future

  34. nothing is better than manual transmission. specially in Japanese cars.

  35. nothing is better than manual transmission in terms of FUN.

  36. power is generated in the engine not the transmission 😆 if u mean the manual is quicker to accelerate with than other transmissions then prove to me that it is faster than a car with the exact same specifications as a manual but has a CVT.

  37. this is for assassin or for me 😕 😕

  38. i ment in both power and speed. you should know that the net horsepower is taken without subtracting the weight of the car.
m/t cars are always lighter by 60-70kg than same a/t and even the CVT is heavier. for example, GMC Sierra net hp is 320 hp, but net (street) hp is 275. look how many horses did the weight kill even with a very strong terque engine.
in my calculations i thing the net (street) hp in altima m/t will be more than CVT by 3 to 4 horsepowers.

  39. thatsit, that was for assassin.

and assassin, will that 3 to 4 hp be enough to overcome the time lost while shifting gears and human errors against a system that does not have a gear and hence no time lost and stays at optimum rpm throughout which means almost no errors?

  40. oh and net power IS measured taking into account the losses. you are taking about gross power which will more than net HP because of not taking into account any losses.

  41. ok, and what about human errors in the CVT tiptronic, because no one in the world will race in mode ( D ).

and cb. go find more about lancer 2.0 5-speed m/t and 6-speed cvt, if you dont believe me.

  42. i said nothing about gross power, gros power of Sierra is 355 hp.

  43. assassin that is what i was asking from my 1st post. why would you not want to race in mode (D) in CVT since it automatically chooses the best rpm for u? how much better can you do with the tiptronic mode that moves the rpm away from the optimum rpm everytime you shift. yes tiptronic does provide the fun factor in a cvt car but is it really faster than just using mode (D) is what i am asking.
did you read the previous posts here?

  44. no i did not.

  45. I THINK CVT MAY DESTROY THE ENGINE. IT DOES NOT GIVE IT TIME TO BREATH.

  46. just a question CB?????
if what you are saying is true (the CVT is giving you the best RPM you want)……then…..why nissan did some upgrades for the CVT in the murano…and why they are talking about ALSO different upgrads in the new maxima….and why they are taking about a sports mood tiptronic in the new CVT of the maxima….although what you are saying the tiptronic is not gona be better than the tiptronic…..man…there are always some way of loosing some power in the responce of the cvt….and i want also to answer your question above….its true that the CVT does not produce the power needed for the car…but as i studied it and took it and for sure you know it (the transmission is a way to transfer the power)…SO, even its not that important in general…..it still plays a major part in transfering the power. man i can give you a car with two cvts with the same engine and the same weight….but still one of them is going to be faster…man what you are reading in the RPM is the # of cycles of the engine….its not the speed of responce…as you know the CVT is just a belt with two pullies….why we dont say there might be a small slip of the belt because of the shocking way of the change of the RPM..the types of pumps for the hydrolic system might affect the whole system..if you think that the CVT ‘for example in the altima’ will give the altima the fastest acc. the car can do..then am sorry, but you are wrong…the company can build a new cvt that will make it faster in the future…thats why i was telling that the tiptronic (((might be))) faster than the CVT…rubber on metal(CVT) is not the same as metal on metal(manual)….========================================
for MR. genious CVT….CVT is still the best among all kinds of transmission for the fuel con. and for the engine….==========

  47. “taking about a sports ”
    *talking

  48. “is not gona be better than the tiptronic”
    *CVT
    sorry for the mistakes i was in a rush 😆 😆 😆 😆

  49. i never said the current CVTs are the best and cannot be bettered. ofcourse they will become better with each upgrade etc. All i’m asking is, is the CVT in (D) mode a faster way to accelerate than the same CVT in tiptronic mode? if the tiptronic is faster then how can you prove it since the CVT is already running at the optimum rpm for THAT particular engine. can a driver use tiptronic and make the car which is already at its optimum rpm in (D) mode accelerate faster?
oh and i just read that the CVT in the new maxima will have automatic engine breaking (Ds) mode. so again my question remains. is there any use of the paddle shifters in the maxima other than for the fun factor?

  50. man….you are too fast 😆 😆 …just wait for my reply later today. 😉

  51. thatsit, cb
i dont know why you are so happy with CVT, for example, there is no CVT in toyota or lexus or even no in toyota future cars like 2009 Toyota Venza.

  52. look to the aurion, 6A in it is doing fine.

  53. hi assassin… 🙂
you want to know why we are so happy with the CVT????!!!!!
and what you are saying is that if toyota doesnt have CVT then its not good…OMG…next time, nissan should take the aproval from toyota to use the CVT 😆 😆 😆 . and who told you there are no toyota cars with CVT (look it up URself in the internet for some american version cars) or ask mash 😉
the second thing is the auto transmission in the aurioun(i dont know how its written 😆 😆 ). since you mentioned that point…go to toyota4arab web site and look at the aurion and the ES350 auto transmission problem that they have….and this didnt happen to one or even ten persons…most of their owners complain about a problem while changing from the 3rd-4th gear ratio(its like a huge shock while changing)..some of them didnot notice that…but they are saying they send a request for toyota to look at this problem(and they call it lexus and compare it with BMW and Mercedes in its quite environment)…lexus people are happy because they are increasing the gear transmissions in their cars to compit with the germans(i think now they have 8 speed trans. in the LS)…in nissan, they have infiniti number of gear ratios in their trans. (in my opinion this CVT system is better that the trans. of even the RR which cost around 3 million dirhams). imagine that…am not saying that because only am a nissan fan boy…even the new lancer it has CVT.

  54. BTW: assassin, the 6A trans. is the same in the lexus ES350 as the Aurion…just to let you know…

  55. even the old lancer 1.6 has CVT

  56. the old 2006 G35 has the same engine of 2008 altima, but G53 is faster a little bit, tell me why……..

  57. CB: just can you read this:
i will comment on it later:
Ds mode takes advantage of the CVT’s infinite selections of available gear ratios and is able to select the right gear, the right time, all the time. This enhances the emotional, sporty feel while driving on canyon roads or city streets. Whether it is upshifting through the gears while accelerating, or automatic engine braking (downshifting) when coming into a corner, Ds mode is able to match vehicle speed and engine rpm with the driver’s intended acceleration input. Ds mode, combined with the sound creator, creates an emotional experience not available on any other CVT vehicle.

Available paddle shifters, mounted on the steering column, allow manual transmission shift changes for varying scenarios – such as winding roads – while the driver’s hands remain on the wheel for optimum vehicle control.
    ———————————
    assassin:
can you tell me what is the HP for every car 😕 😕

  58. g35 was 275
    altima is 270

  59. i already read that before and had included it in one of my previous posts (about the Ds mode in maxima).
so the use of paddle shifters enhance cornering abilities? that is funny because the CVT automatically chooses the best and appropriate ‘gear’ ratio for you. if you do not believe me then listen to this. in 1993 Williams F1 team had introduced CVT in their F1 car and had David Coulthard take it around the British grand prix track. the car was way faster than the regular geared f1 transmissions. infact the car was so fast through the straights and corners that they banned it. 😆 here is a video of it in action and the driver telling you how much better it is through the corners.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3UpBKXMRto

  60. no man…you didnt get my point here…and in the maxima with the DS mood, am sure that its faster than the tiptronic…..OK till know every thing is OK….now… WHAT ABOUT THE CVT WITHOUT THE (DS) MODE????thats what i was trying to say from the beginning 😀 😀 . are we sure that the CVt in the normal mode is ALSO faster than the tiptronic….this is the point here. if the normal case is enough to beat the tiptronic and it gives the fastest acc. then why there is a DS mode???? just for fun i think 😕 😕
in the altima the case is different…as nissan people said…the CVT in the maxima is not the same as the CVT in any another car…its tuned to give you what you want and wish. its true that the altima has the CVT but we are not sure if it is tuned to be faster than the tiptronic, thats why we cant say here or lets say ‘assume’ that the CVT is the best here. BUT IT CAN BE IF THEY (NISSAN) WANT.
BTW: if you get any offical information about which one is better just can you inform me so maybe when i want to race i will chose the best 😆 😆

  61. and let assassin look at the link and read some comments…maybe…he will be convinced that the CVT is not S**t from nissan…CVT is the future…and toyota tried to use it but they failed 😆 😆 😆
its just for those who have real engineers not for tea boys 😆 😆 😆

  62. mash…am sure you got angry
    64 comments
and this is the 56…..i think this is the largest number of comments in the whole site

  63. of course shifting in mode ( D ) is faster than tiptronic in both A/T and CVT just in drag race

  64. thatsit.
mash is really so angry after your last comment,
the number after 64 is 56
then, i have to ask you this question that you asked me before 7 months, ((( in which grade you are ))).

  65. let’s hope not ((KG2))

  66. because any kid in KG2 can count from 1 to 100

  67. OMG 😯 😯 😯 😯 😯 56
nooooooooooooooooooo, i have to go back to school 😥 😥 😥
ok let me try this time, oh…its easy this is 70

  68. the maxima will be having 380 horse power enjoy guys

  69. sohi who told you that? :S

“Update: The 2009 Nissan Maxima comes with a standard 3.5-litre V6 with 290 hp and 353 Nm of torque, mated to a CVT transmission and front-wheel-drive.”

maybe the 380 is an option? 😛

  70. 😮 😮 😮 Wauuuuuuuuuuu…………..

  71. its a spectacular car,its going to be a huge success,no doubt about it.

  72. 74 comments and nobody else seems to think those tail lights have an uncanny resemblance to the ones on the Toyota Yaris?

  73. guys the maxima 2009 will be launched in saudi arabia?

  74. this car is so tight.I mean is more or less like an airplane.I love this car.

    From ismail…

  75. its very nice car i saw a demo in dubai festival city last week…………am about to buy one, but am worried about the insurance cost.

some insurance companies in dubai does not isure such vehicles…

    thank you

  76. the CTV is developed with JODCO. It’s not only Nissan Engineers would developed it.

It has nice styling inside out better than the Altima but if it goes at 150k or above it not worth to buy Maxima

  77. It cost number 2 – 118K

and number 1 full option is 132K

  78. good brother good!!

  79. es lo mejor en autos yea yea nice y peron dentro y fuero yo lo tengo esta huuuu veyo veyo…
