Heavy-duty GMC Sierra HD gets 2011 Denali version

GMC has announced the new 2011 Sierra Denali HD, the first Denali version of the heavy-duty GMC pickup, available in both 2500 (3/4 ton) and 3500 series (1-ton) configurations. If you think there is no market for a luxury-oriented work truck, then think again.

“Due to positive responses received from consumers, media and dealers to the recently announced 2011 Sierra Denali HD 2500 series, GMC is adding additional Denali variants to the Sierra full-size pickups.” All these trucks will be available in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants, with two bed sizes, and a range of engines that includes a new Duramax 6.6-litre turbodiesel V8 with 397 hp and 1037 Nm of torque peaking at 1,600 rpm.

The heavy-duty Denali version is not out here yet. But there is a market for these here too. Last month, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra owners participated in a 40-strong convoy of pickups from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi, courtesy of General Motors, where many HD owners showed up as well. Many were modified as well.

It makes one wonder why any regular people would need a truck this big. What heavy work are they involved in? Colourful owner commentary at the UAE event included “I chose a GMC because you can modify it as much as your imagination allows you. The first thing that attracts most people’s attention are the scissor-style doors that go up.” Another owner said “I took part in this event because I love powerful vehicles and the feeling of driving on the open highway.” No talk of off-roading or cargo capacity then.
