Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Viano caravan concepts

Well, there’s been news that the Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus has ended its long production. And that obviously turned out to be a sad moment for many camping enthusiasts. But, there’s something else to cheer about, at least in Europe, because Mercedes-Benz has officially shown off their Sprinter Caravan Concept at the Caravan Salon 2013 held in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The Caravan is basically just your average Sprinter, except for the part where the cargo space has been replaced with what we’d call a “decent home”. You get a fully furnished interior with a kitchen, living area, a bathroom with integrated wardrobe, front seats that can swivel all the way around, laminated flooring and walls and ceiling covered in Alcantara, plus LED lighting throughout. There’s also a water system on-board for your needs.

Mercedes-Benz also showcased their Viano Marco Polo and Viano Fun camper variants. The former comes with a pop-up roof as standard. There’s also cupboards, cooker, sink, fridge, water system, stowage space, wardrobe. There’s also rear bench seats which are basically two single seats which can be individually adjusted electrically right down to a full reclining position.

The latter Viano Fun model comes in two lengths and offers between five and seven seats. The seats are arranged around a folding table and can be moved as desired within a flexible rail system. There’s also additional an optional pop-up roof, which creates plenty of room and the necessary space for a roof bed.

Mercedes claims that it ships out 4,000 Sprinter Camper vans to the North America alone. Apart from that, they say there’s a rising demand from the Asian countries like China. But it’s unlikely these specially-customised campers would make it to GCC soil any time soon.
