Bentley Continental 1997 Overview

The original Continental by Bentley is a large, expensive, luxury coupé made by Rolls-Royce for a 10-year run. It was the first Bentley in 25 years to not feature a body shared with a Rolls-Royce model. It was also the first Bentley to use a GM 4-speed automatic transmission to work Bentley's long-running twin-turbo 6.8-litre V8. Power output of the earliest models are unknown, as Rolls Royce was too snobby to reveal numbers. But back then, the Continental was still the quickest, most expensive, and most powerful Bentley ever. The convertible version was called the Bentley Azure, launched in 1995. The cabin featured usual Bentley traits such as acres of wood, leather and chrome. The standard model was known as the Continental R, but 1994 saw production of a severely-limited Continental S, and then the shortened Continental T was introduced in 1996 as a performance model. Mulliner editions, which started in 1999, added performance upgrades on both the R and the T. A handful of Continental SC models were built in 1999, with a huge lift-out glass sunroof.
