Mercedes-Benz G-Class 2003 Overview
The Gelaendewagen first debuted in 1979 as a utilitarian offroader and as military transport. In 1990, it got its first major revamp, upgrading it to luxury specs, but retaining its classic looks. Its boxy styling was again left alone during the 1997 update, which introduced a new range of engines, updated again and again over the years until its next major update in 2007. The trademark clean-cut, sharp lines have already made the G-Wagen a cult classic. The G-Class represents pure off-road driving pleasure. It is among the elite few off-roaders that combine comfortable surroundings with a complete suite of off-road equipment. The model range includes a five-door wagon, a three-door wagon and a limited-edition soft-top version of the three-door. The only petrol engine debuting in 1997 was the 3.2-litre V6 in the G 320, alongside various diesel motors. The 5.0-litre V8-powered G 500 debuted in 1998. In 2003 came the first AMG model, namely the 5.5-litre G 55 AMG. This was replaced in 2004 by the upgraded supercharged 5.4-litre G 55 AMG Kompressor. Along the way came turbodiesel models, such as the G 320 CDI in 1997 and the G 400 CDI in 2000. Standard specifications include permanent four-wheel drive with an off-road reduction gear plus the electronically controlled traction system 4ETS, and three differential locks which can be operated at the push of a button. Stability control was added in 2001, and while dual front airbags are available, there are no side airbags. The G-Class is built for Mercedes-Benz by Magna Steyr in Austria, and has been since 1979.
