BMW 1-Series 2006 Overview

The 1-Series is the smallest range in BMW's arsenal. Built to compete in the same market segment as the Volkswagen Golf and the Peugeot 307, the 1-Series is the only vehicle in its class featuring rear-wheel-drive. The 1-Series was first offered to the market in 2004 as a 5-door hatchback using its own platform. It replaced the slow-selling 3-Series Compact range and is the most affordable BMW ever. The 1-Series shares many components with the E90 3 Series. These include MacPherson strut suspension in the front, and a trapezoidal-link rear axle. Petrol versions include the 116i, the 118i, the 120i and the 130i, while the unloved diesel versions include the 120d, and many other body styles joined the range after the 2008 facelift, including a three-door hatchback, a two-door coupe and a convertible. The 130i is one of the few hot hatches that offer a six-cylinder engine. The 1-Series is built in Regensburg, Germany, with some of the engines coming from the Hams Hall plant in Birmingham, England. Considering the price, the way it looks, and the number of these we've seen on the streets, we'll guess BMW is having trouble moving these out of showrooms in this region.

BMW 1-Series 2006 Reliability & Resale Value

Reliability
Resale Value
Known Problems Seems many owners suffer squeaky window rubber. ECU failures on early petrol models. Many steering rack failures on recent cars under warranty. Power steering fluid level should be checked regularly, as steering rack may leak fluid out of end seal and into track-rod end gaiter. Doors may make squeaking noises. Random single reports of a/c compressor failure and loose bits in the engine compartment causing problems.
