2009 Mini Cooper convertible released

The latest generation of the Mini convertible will finally be released at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new-for-2009 model will of course be based on the second-generation Mini Cooper that was launched in 2007.

The Mini Cooper convertible is powered by a 118 hp 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine, while the Mini Cooper S convertible is powered by a 172 hp 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, both mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic. The European-market version gets BMW’s ‘EfficientDynamics’ features such as brake regeneration and stop-start function, although these features will not make it to all markets outside Europe. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) with Electronically Differential Lock Control (EDLC) enhances traction under acceleration, and is available as an option or as part of the Sport Package.

In terms of convertible-specific features, the new model now has hidden rear-tailgate hinges, while the rear roll hoops are now hidden and only pop up during a rollover accident. The soft top can retract in only 15 seconds, at speeds of up to 32 kph. It can be partially opened, like a sunroof, at speeds of up to 100 kph. Frontal airbags and head/thorax airbags are standard. Other features include a retarded “openometer” gauge that measures the amount of time that you’ve had the top down.

Expect the new Mini convertible to hit the streets of Dubai sometime before summer next year, as BMW launches the car in time for the GCC summer.
