Volkswagen Golf GTI 2009 launched in UAE & GCC

2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI
Volkswagen Middle East has launched the “new” sixth generation of the VW Golf GTI in the UAE and other GCC markets. The 2009 GTI is largely the same as the old model, with the mildest of power increases and the addition of more technology to make it handle better.

Starting off as a limited-edition barebones hot hatch in the 1970s, it quickly grew to become quite a porker by the 1990s, requiring various weighty enhancements to retain some degree of handling.

The interior is familiar, as it is exactly the same as the one in the old model, as are the wheels. Indeed, the only new appearance changes seem to be the non-descript new front end and the new tail lights.

The 2009 Golf GTI still comes with the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, now misleadingly dubbed the “TSI” just like VW’s newer turbo-supercharged motors, with a 10 hp bump up in power to 210 hp, and 280 Nm of torque from 1,400 rpm. It now manages 7.3 litres per 100 km of rated fuel consumption, although real-world driving has yielded much higher figures. The car takes around 6.9 seconds to hit 100 kph, with a top speed of 240 kph. A “sound generator” and new dual-tip exhaust apparently improve the engine’s sound.

A 6-speed manual and a 6-speed DSG automanual are available, although past experience has shown us that the manual version will be hard to come by in the UAE.

The 2009 GTI has been lowered by 20 mm and now has a standard electronic transverse differential lock called XDS. Complicated options such as electronic damper control, adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, hill-hold control, turning HID headlights and other junk weigh down the car further.

Available in 3-door and 5-door body styles, pricing is likely to start beyond Dhs 100,000, climbing ever higher with the modern options.
