Middle East Motor Awards 2013 results announced

Middle East Motor Awards 2013 6
The results of the 2013 Middle East Motor Awards were announced last evening at a ceremony on the Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah, hosted by Muhammed Ali Sajjad of the Expo Centre Sharjah. I was one of the 18 judges, although the cars were score and the points were tallied long ago, so were there just to hear who were the winners in each category, as well as Car Of The Year.

Best Small Sedan: Peugeot 301

2013 Peugeot 301 in the UAE 3

In a surprise, the Peugeot 301 beat out the Nissan Sentra, Volkswagen Polo and Kia Cerato. The Sentra was top in my own score sheet, and I hadn’t driven the Kia.

Best Midsize Sedan: Honda Accord

2013 Honda Accord 2

The Honda Accord beat out the Mazda 6, Nissan Altima and Opel Insignia. The Accord was top in my scoring too, although I did not drive the Mazda or the Opel in time to score it.

Best Large Sedan: Chevrolet Impala

2014 Chevrolet Impala

The Chevrolet Impala won against the Toyota Avalon. The Avalon was the winner in my scores, only because I’m blacklisted by General Motors.

Best Executive Sedan: Cadillac ATS

2013 Cadillac ATS

The Cadillac ATS won against the Lexus ES 350 and the Kia Quoris. The Lexus was topping my score sheet, only because I hadn’t driven the Kia and the Cadillac, the latter due to the aforementioned blacklisting.

Best Luxury Sedan: Lexus LS 460

2013 Lexus LS 460L

The Lexus LS 460 beat out the BMW 7-Series and the Cadillac XTS. That matched with my winner too, if only because the other two never offered me their cars so I couldn’t score them.

Best Luxury Performance Sedan: BMW M6 Gran Coupe

2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe won against the Audi S8, Lexus LS 460 F-Sport and the Maserati Quattroporte. The Lexus was topping my own score sheet, because I hadn’t driven the Maserati in time, and we’re not on good terms with BMW or Audi.

Best Crossover: Toyota RAV4

2013 Toyota RAV4 2

The Toyota RAV4 beat out the Mazda CX-5 and the Ford Escape. It was the winner for me too, as a complete package.

Best Midsize SUV: Jeep Grand Cherokee

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the UAE 23

The Jeep Grand Cherokee beat out the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Pathfinder and Kia Sorento. It’s the winner on my sheet too.

Best Luxury SUV: Land Rover Range Rover

2014 Range Rover 2

The Range Rover won against the Mercedes-Benz G500 and Infiniti JX. The Infiniti was the only car I’d scored since neither of the other cars were made available to me, although I’d say the Range Rover had an easy win here.

Best Performance SUV: Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

2013 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S won against the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. I pegged the Jeep as our top dog here because we never drove the top Cayenne.

Best Small Hatchback: Volkswagen Golf

2013 Volkswagen Golf TSI 3

The VW Golf won against the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and the Opel Astra GTC. My top scorer was the Alfa, although I’d say the VW still had a deserved win. We never drove the Opel.

Best Performance Hatchback: Ford Focus ST

2013 Ford Focus ST

The Ford Focus ST beat out the VW Golf GTI and the Renault Clio RS200. The Focus ST is easily my winner too, especially since the new Renault is available in very few Middle East countries, and never came to the GCC.

Best Premium Hatchback: Mercedes-Benz A 250

2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class 3

The Mercedes-Benz A 250 beat out the Volvo V40. My own score sheet was empty for these, since I drove neither car.

Best Sports Coupe: Porsche Cayman

2013 Porsche Cayman

The Porsche Cayman had an easy win over the SRT Viper and the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. I scored the Cayman based on my Boxster experience, the SRT wasn’t released in time, and the General Motors ban made sure I didn’t drive the Camaro.

Best Premium Sports Coupe: Maserati GranTurismo Sport

2011 Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale

The Maserati GranTurismo Sport won against the Aston Martin Vanquish and the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. The top scorer on my list was the Aston Martin, since I never got around to driving the other two.

Best Premium Sports Convertible: Jaguar F-Type

2014 Jaguar F-Type in the UAE 2

The Jaguar F-Type beat out the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and the Mercedes-Benz SL 500. The F-Type is the winner in my book too, even though I never got around to driving the other two.

Best Premium Luxury Convertible: Bentley Continental GTC Speed

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed 2

The Bentley Continental GTC Speed won against the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe. The Bentley is one of my favourite cars, but if memory serves me right, the two contenders were tied in my score sheet.

Best Supercar: McLaren 12C Spider

2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider 6

The McLaren 12C Spider beat out the Ferrari F12 and the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster. The McLaren 12C is a winner in my list too, especially with the upgrades over last year’s coupe. It also helped that I didn’t drive the other two.

Car of the Year: Jaguar F-Type

2014 Jaguar F-Type in the UAE

Through multiple shortlisting processes, the Jaguar F-Type beat out the Range Rover and the Cadillac ATS to take the top crown. I voted for the Jaguar too, so at least the choice that counts went my way!

All winners were selected based on total points given in several categories for each car by 18 judges. Keep in mind that only cars launched from late last year to the middle of this year were eligible to be part of the 2013 awards. Cars launched after this summer will be contenders next year.

  1. Quick question and no offence intended whatsoever, how is one supposed to judge fairly without even driving all the cars that are put to vote?

    • Author

Which is why judges don’t vote for the cars that they haven’t driven.

There are 18 judges, so those who have driven it will have their points included. And that’s how cars that I didn’t vote for, won anyway, because the other judges have driven it.

There isn’t much I can do when I get sidelined by certain carmakers for being too honest. You have to wonder what they are trying to hide.

Here are some of the reasons why we’ve been banned now or in the past:

    – I compared a 150 hp “luxury” hatchback with cloth manual seats and faulty door locks to a Corolla.

    – I said an event is boring on Facebook, without even mentioning their name.

    – I said I don’t like the name of a certain midsize sedan.

    – I dissed several carmakers for repeatedly hinting we are too poor to attend their media-drive events.

    – I called a certain muscle-car crap.

    – I can’t even explain why a couple of the German luxury carmakers ignore me, even though I didn’t say a damn thing against them. Apparently I don’t fit their “criteria” or whatever.

  3. I do respect that however you in most of above mentioned cases you voted for a certain car just only because you haven’t driven the other two not because it’s really the best one and this is unfair/mislead your reader and this is clear in your recommendation list there isn’t any BMW, MERC, Audi & Porsche in it and regardless anything theses are the top brands in the world.

  4. who were the other 17?

  5. @mash

In general I find these “Prestigious” middle east motor awards aload of nonsense..

anyway I was looking at consumer reports and interestingly the best brands in terms of reliability was as follows

    Lexus
    Toyota
    Honda
Audi – specifically the Audi A6-20T

They recommend to stay away from Nissan Altima 2013 as transmission issues were reported…

Why doesn’t Drive Arabia provide something like that? I,e,

    • Actually the list goes like this by consumer reports:

      Lexus
      Toyota
Acura (Honda’s luxury division in the US and not Honda)
      Audi

Honda took the 8th place a slip of 4 spots for the last survey, Ford, kia, nissan and hyundai all suffered this year and did not even make the top 20.

Consumer Reports runs on money from millions of subscribers. Would we have 1 million people in this region pay to fund the collection of that kind of information? No.

And yet, ours is the only buyer guide in the region to provide information about problems with cars older than 3 years. Problems with newer cars are harder to gather and aren’t as much of an issue because it’ll be fixed under warranty for free.

  6. Mazda finished 5th in the listing and all the Mazda cars are recommended with above average reliability rating. I guess Honda slipped to 8th place only becuz of the V6 model of the accord and Nissan was way below at 22nd position and many of their cars are rated poor in the reliability. Audi has surprised everyone hard to believe.

  7. @zao

audi has done well, the recent audi models have been pretty reliable.. basing on people I know who own these cars…

  8. So essentially the best way to win is to let absolutely everyone drive your car in the hope that even if your vehicles are crap, your competitors have hopefully not given their cars out to test drive! Quite a mess.

It’s up to the carmakers whether they want to offer up their car for review, or hide it to avoid negative coverage.
