Hummer electric truck coming under GMC brand
General Motors is bringing back the Hummer, except it will now be under the GMC brand — and it will be fully electric. The carmaker seems intent to shed the image of the former standalone 4×4 brand as a planet-killer, and it’s a rather genius marketing move rather than just calling it a Camaro Volt-E or something.
This electric truck is scheduled for a big reveal on May 20, until which you’ll have to endure childish teasers than has become the norm in American car marketing nowadays. The first teaser shows a fully-lit faux grille and Heavy Duty-style roof lights that hint at a large size.
GM did release some interesting stats though, such as the claim that it will produce the equivalent of 1,000 hp, do the 0-100 kph run in a bit above 3 seconds, and have 15,600 Nm of torque (although some say that last figure is just Tesla-style creative mathematics).
The company said the GMC Hummer EV will be produced at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in Michigan. The assembly plant will eventually produce only all-electric trucks and SUVs, as well as a self-driving electric ride-sharing shuttle unveiled by its subsidiary Cruise.
The electric truck is expected to be in showrooms by 2021.
