2021 Toyota Supra gets more power, adds new base engine
The Toyota Supra’s comeback was a highly celebrated one by petrol heads. Though with a lot of help from BMW, the Supra was well-received for the most part. And now, for the 2021 model year, Toyota is improving the formula with more power and a new four-cylinder engine.
Introducing a 4-cylinder base model Supra was a debated one as people believed that it may eat into the territory of the Toyota GT 86. But Toyota has voted for it anyway. The Supra 2.0 is powered by a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre engine plucked from BMW Z4 sDrive30i. The engine produces 255 hp and 400 Nm of torque. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic. It can power the base model from 0 to 100 kph in just over 5.2 seconds.
The Supra 2.0 also sheds some weight, 91 kg to be precise. It tips the scales at 1442 kg now. To achieve this, the four-piston brake calipers are traded for single-piston rotors, active differential and suspension are taken out, and the power-adjustable seats are not offered. Safety features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert and even parking sensors are offered as an option called Safety and Technology package. This package also adds wireless Apple CarPlay, navigation, and a 12-speaker audio system, all of which are standard on the bigger Supra 3.0.
Talking of the bigger-engined Supra, the baby 2.0 hasn’t taken away the limelight from it completely. The six-cylinder Supra 3.0 still sports the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine but for 2021, it gets a substantial power bump. The rated power output now stands at 382 hp, 47 hp more than before (although the 2020 model was already suspected of making more horses than they claimed). The torque gets bumped up by a small 4 Nm, at 499 Nm. This increase in power can take the six-cylinder Supra from 0-100 kph in just a bit over 4 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the previous model. the eight-speed automatic remains the only gearbox option.
The Supra 3.0 also gets updates in the departments of adaptive suspension, power steering, stability control and active differential. An 8.8-inch touchscreen replaces the old 6.5-inch unit inside the Supra. The Safety and Technology pack is available as an option here too.
The 2021 Toyota Supra 3.0 also gets an A91 Special Edition which comes in Nocturnal black or Refraction blue, the latter of which is exclusive to the A91. It also gets parts like carbon fibre mirror caps and rear lip spoiler. There are stripes on the body to denote the special edition status while the interior gets contrast stitching and Alcantara panels. Only 1000 A91 Supras will be built.
No info about the prices of the Supra models have been announced. It remains to be seen if the 2.0-litre base model is offered in the UAE and GCC, although it still won’t be anywhere near as cheap as the Toyota 86.
