2021 Fuso Canter is now Euro 5-compliant in UAE and GCC

If you live in the Middle East, you may be familiar with the beautiful fragrance that comes through your a/c vents every time you are stuck behind a Canter pickup in traffic. The best-selling workhorse that used to be a Mitsubishi and is now under the Fuso brand, will become Euro 5 compliant, which means the 2021 model will be kinder to the environment and your nose.

The new Fuso Canter Euro 5 offers a wide range of variants. There are two different cab widths available: the streamlined standard cabin, which is just 1,695 mm wide and suitable for squeezing into back alleys; and the wide cabin, measuring 1,995 mm in width and made for carrying 3 up front. In addition, the wide cabin is also available with a crew cabin option, fitting up to seven people.

The new generation is said to have cleaner emissions and is more fuel-efficient than previous models. The newly designed common-rail 4P10 2,998cc engine is available in two engine outputs with 128 hp (130 ps) and 148 hp (150 ps). Both engines offer a flat torque curve with 300 Nm and 370 Nm at 1,300 rpm respectively.

With two different axle configurations in 4×2 and 4×4 variants and a wide range of permissible gross vehicle weight spectrum from 5.7 tons to 8.55 tons, the new Fuso Canter retains its versatility for custom setups.

Currently the range is available with 5-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) will soon be launched for the new Canter range in the 6.5 tons weight variant.

There is a wide-cabin 4×4 model, in single-cab and crew-cab versions, with manually selectable four-wheel-drive, low-range gearing and a permissible gross vehicle weight of up to 6 tons.

In all models, the Euro 5 emission norm is achieved through an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) which is configured for the vehicle’s lifetime and is maintenance-free, eliminating the need to be cleaned or replaced. Fuso says the new Canter “over-fulfils the local emissions regulations required in the UAE,” which are actually relatively lenient compared to passenger cars.

The 2021 FUSO Canter Euro 5’s safety features include ABS with EBD, BOS (Brake Override System) and 2 airbags. The standard Exhaust Brake System (EBS) valve is fitted on the turbocharger outlet and uses the vehicle exhaust gas to create backpressure and slow down the engine, resulting in reduced stress on brakes when driving downhill.

The Canter has finally entered the modern era, and will likely continue its dominance in the work-truck segment.
