2024 BMW X5 and X6 debut with mechanical and cosmetic updates
BMW X5 and X6 were the German brand’s SUV flagships for a long time till the bigger X7, and then the iX came around. But the SUVs are still success stories for BMW and the 2024 BMW X5 and X6 are here to keep them fresh. The new SUVs get some cosmetic updates and bring in some changes under the hood.
Let us start with the bigger changes first. Opening the hood reveals a slew of new engines. Both the X5 and X6 get a new turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine that is paired to a 48 V mild-hybrid system. The combined output of this pairing stands at 375 hp and 519 Nm. This is a 40 hp and 69 Nm jump over the previous six-cylinder version. This helps the SUVs drop 0.1 seconds off the 0-100 kph run time.
The more potent 2024 BMW X5 and X6 M60i xDrive models continue with the existing 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 but gain a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. But this does not affect the performance figures anyway. There is a new xDrive50e PHEV model in the line-up, replacing the xDrive45e. It too uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six but with an updated electric motor to produce 483 hp and 700 Nm. The M60i xDrive can hit 100 kph from a standstill in just 4.8 seconds. The battery for these models has also been upgraded to 25.7 kWh from 17.1 kWh, giving it an electric-only range of 64 kms.
All engines get paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is now updated for smoother shifts. An optional M Sport package comes with a Sprint setting that sets the transmission and the powertrain for maximum performance.
On the visual side of things, the 2024 BMW X5 and X6 get narrower headlamps and updated front bumpers. The X5 gains an optional illuminated grill while the X6 already comes with it. A standard addition to the X6 is the M Sport package which improves the aesthetics. There are multiple new body shades to choose from.
A large curved glass houses two separate displays, a 12.3-inch infotainment display and a 14.9-inch digital instrument cluster. The interior also gains an ambient light bar with 15 colour options.
A new Highway Assistant feature finds a place in the optional Driver Assistance Professional Package. This system lets the drivers leave the steering wheel on certain highways at speeds up to 137 kph. A Parking Assistant feature records driving for up to 200 metres. This helps the driver summon the parked vehicle to them via the My BMW App.
In the United States, the prices for the 2024 BMW X5 and X6 starts from $66,195 (AED 243,134) for the X5 sDrive40i and $74,895 (AED 275,089) for the X6 sDrive40i. It can go up to $90,295 (AED 331,653) for the X5 M60i xDrive and $94,595 (AED 347,447) for the X6 M60i xDrive. These can vary when they finally reach our shores.
