2025 Nissan Patrol vs Toyota Land Cruiser engine specs comparison
The 2025 Nissan Patrol has launched an all-new model after 15 years. While the previous Y62 generation model remained popular, a change was needed to improve the performance in terms of power and fuel efficiency. The Toyota Land Cruiser got a new model a few years earlier, in 2022.
The biggest talking points for both models have been the turbocharged engines that replace the V8. We take a closer look at these engines and the naturally aspirated engines on offer on both models.
Nissan Patrol 3.8L vs Toyota Land Cruiser 4.0L
Model | Nissan Patrol | Toyota Land Cruiser |
Engine | 3.8-litre V6 | 4.0-litre V6 |
Horsepower | 316 hp @ 6,400 rpm | 271 hp @ 5,600 rpm |
Torque | 386 Nm @ 4,400 rpm | 385 Nm @ 4,400 rpm |
Transmission | 9-speed automatic | 6-speed automatic |
Fuel economy | 9.7 km/l | 9.4 km/l |
The Nissan Patrol now gets a 3.8-litre V6 VQ38DD direct-injection engine. This engine has been around since 2020, and it is used in the Nissan Frontier pickup truck, which is sold in North America.
The Toyota Land Cruiser engine, on the other hand, has been used since 2009. The robust 4.0-litre V6 1GR-FE engine has been used in various Toyota models over the years. Currently, it’s being used in the Land Cruiser, Hilux, and Fortuner.
Both engines have very similar torque numbers, achieving peak torque at the same rpm. In terms of horsepower, though, the Patrol edges ahead of the Land Cruiser by 35 hp.
Another aspect is that the Nissan Patrol uses a 9-speed automatic transmission. The Land Cruiser has a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy numbers for the two are also very similar, achieving figures for kilometres/litre in the mid-9s.
Nissan Patrol 3.5T vs Toyota Land Cruiser 3.5T
Model | Nissan Patrol | Toyota Land Cruiser |
Engine | 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 | 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 |
Horsepower | 425 hp @5,600 rpm | 409 hp @5,200 rpm |

Transmission | 9-speed automatic | 10-speed automatic |
Fuel economy | 9.9 km/l | 9.3 km/l |
Gone is the V8, but the new Nissan Patrol gets a more powerful 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It produces 425 hp, similar to the previous generation Patrol Nismo. However, the new unit makes much more torque – 140 Nm more.
The Patrol’s VR35DDTT is actually an all-new engine, not the same engine used in the Nissan GT-R. The new turbo engine is also used in the Infiniti QX80.
The Toyota Land Cruiser uses the V35A, also a 3.5-litre twin-turbo engine, which first appeared in the Lexus LS 500 in 2017. The engine was tweaked to give the Land Cruiser more torque.
The Land Cruiser has 50 Nm less torque than the Nissan Patrol and 409 hp, which is also slightly less.
While the Nissan Patrol uses the same 9-speed auto transmission for the turbo engine, the Land Cruiser 3.5-litre turbo models get an ASIN 10-speed automatic transmission.
The fuel economy for both cars is again quite similar.
