While we were trolling around in Dubai looking for a midsize sedan to buy, we came across this attractive compact car, fully registered, and driven by staff from Arabian Automobiles, who happen to be the local dealers for Nissan, Infiniti and Renault here. On closer inspection, “SAIC” badges revealed its Chinese origins. It was also badged as an MG 550 1.8T. Here is a scenario that happened to us just last week. We asked for a full tank of petrol at the station for our Chevrolet Cruze, which was already 60% full. The attendant put in the pump nozzle and left. The tank was then full and the nozzle “clicked” and stopped pumping at Dhs 39.40 only. So I pull out 40 bucks in cash, ready to hand it over. The attendant came over and started forcefully pumping more petrol into the tank, even as the nozzle clicked several times. This pushed up the bill to Dhs 42. The ironic bit is no one ever receives extra petrol after the first click.

However, Fiat is making a comeback in the region, and they did invite us to their 2010 Bravo unveiling in Abu Dhabi, complete with a fleet of European-spec test cars for the event.

We’ve had in our possession a 2000 BMW Z3 M Roadster since the beginning of 2008. It is as close as limited-income people like us can get to owning an exotic car without selling off kidneys and limbs. But in the past decade, the Z3 was replaced by the Z4, and then came a second-generation Z4 in 2009. So for a few days in 2010, we had in our possession a BMW Z4 sDrive30i. Ironically, the new mid-range Z4 now costs as much as the M Roadster used to cost a decade ago. So is a regular Z4 really at the same level as an M-tuned Z3 of the past?
