About 42 hours after Highcroft Acura driver Scott Sharp walked away from a crash during practice for the Petit Le Mans racing event in the United States, a freshly-built Acura ARX-02a was rolled out for the morning warmup on Saturday. The Highcroft crew put in marathon sessions of work, totalling 20 hours, to build a brand new racecar, as LeMans teams do not generally have a backup car. A spare carbon-fibre tub was picked up from the Honda Performance Development shop in California and shipped, while the crew at the Atlanta racetrack salvaged 10% of the old parts for use in the new car.
Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button took Brawn GP a significant step closer to both world championship titles at the 2009 Italian F1 Grand Prix in Monza on Sunday afternoon, in a race rendered dramatic by a last lap shunt for McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, as he was pushing hard in third place after Button.
In what has to be the most random podium finishes of the season, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen became the sixth different victor in six races, and his first for 2009, with a closely-raced success in Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, in which his KERS system played a crucial role in the opening stages. Rubens Barrichello finally has a win for Brawn GP, coming in first at the 2009 European F1 Grand Prix in Valencia with a performance that brought him home just over two seconds ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, whose pit-crew cost him the win.
Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber started off from pole and went on to win this Sunday’s 2009 German F1 Grand Prix. No matter what was thrown at the Australian, including a drive-through penalty for a brush off the startline with Brawn’s Rubens Barrichello, Webber came through and delivered in devastating style.
An agreement has been reached between the FIA and the FOTA teams to prevent a breakaway Formula One series.
After qualifying at the head of the class, Sebastian Vettel readily launched his Red Bull RB5 into the lead of the 2009 British F1 Grand Prix. In a dominant drive that highlighted Red Bull Renault’s strength on high-speed circuits, Vettel pulled away from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car by as much as a second per lap in a series of quick moves, and never looked even close to being challenged.
The Formula One Teams’ Association, FOTA, has officially announced that it is setting up a breakaway championship, during a press conference on June 19. Following a four-hour meeting, the eight FOTA members that includes Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, BMW Sauber, Toyota, Brawn, Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso, said they had grown frustrated with the FIA’s stance on new rules for 2010, and had no choice but to create their own series.
In only their third year of participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Peugeot 908 diesel prototypes managed to maintain a very high pace and obliterated Audi’s decade-long dominance of the annual event held in France.
