Cars getting hacked is major news now, but don’t worry just yet

Cyber-security researchers Chris Valasek and Charlie Miller were in the news earlier this week after a Wired magazine story showed the two programmers access critical vehicle controls on a Jeep Cherokee that allowed them to remotely control critical vehicle functions. The Fiat-Chrysler group had already been alerted to the issue and were quietly offering a software fix to customers in a bid to not alert malicious hackers. However, Chrysler is not the first brand to be vulnerable to hacking, as Chevrolet and BMW were in the news for the same reason this year.

Total recall: Here are the biggest recalls for US brands in 2014

Car production is an honest process, the Americans would tell you. It’s a simple process, the Japanese will say, and the Germans would go on about how intricate and detailed the process is. But when it comes to after-market assurance, there’s just one word dictating their manufacturing flaws; swift recalls. Recalling faulty vehicles is not unfamiliar in today’s automotive scene. First drive: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 at Jeep Funatic Al Ain

We were invited to an off-road event organized by Eastern Motors, the dealers for Jeep in Al Ain. Called the Jeep Funatic, the event was the first of its kind to be organized in Al Ain, and is similar to the Jeep Jamboree event held annually in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. While the Jeepers were expected to roll in their own Jeeps, we were handed over a ride by the dealer. Expecting nothing more (and less) than a Wrangler, we were in for a surprise, as the ride turned out to be a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V6.
