The Nissan Kicks walked into the market in 2018, pushing the Nissan Juke out the door in the Middle East. The Kicks brought in a more conventional look instead of the Juke’s funky design (though the new Juke has grown a bit more mature since then). Three years into its life, Nissan gives the little crossover a nip and tuck for the 2021 model year. The 2021 Nissan Kicks has been revealed in Thailand, flaunting an updated design and a sort-of hybrid powertrain.
As comparison tests go, this isn’t the most exciting, but it is probably relevant to a whole lot more people than pitting Porsches and Ferraris against McLarens and Lamborghinis yet again (spoiler alert: Porsches and Ferraris are always better). What we have here today are the newest segment of vehicles to sprout from the SUV revolution — the sub-compact crossovers. Not quite SUVs, but not really cars either, the sub-compact crossover gives owners the feeling of driving an SUV while keeping ownership costs within car-like levels. The newest of the bunch is the Honda HR-V, going up against the immensely-successful Nissan Kicks.
Nissan invited us to a “surprise” launch event in Dubai, only telling us that it will be a crossover of some sort. That crossover turned out to be the 2018 Nissan Kicks. The more surprising news was that it will replace the Juke crossover and the Tiida hatchback in the carmaker’s GCC line-up, even though these cars will continue to be on sale in other markets such as Lebanon and Jordan.
