When the 2022 Subaru BRZ came around late last year, it was an answer to the persistent prayers of the petrolhead lot for a faster model, even though they chose not to strap on a turbo. Toyota hinted that the months-ago delay to reveal their sister-model was because it was going to be very different. The 2022 Toyota GR 86 has now broken cover, almost exactly the same as the BRZ except for a different bumper and an abbreviation of Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division stuck on to its name.

The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 twins were revered as a common person’s fix for affordable performance when it was launched, though it didn’t have as much power as other similarly priced coupes. The four-cylinder boxer engine, rear-wheel-drive and manual gearbox made it popular among “new” enthusiasts. And now eight years into its life, there is a new and more powerful 2022 Subaru BRZ.

In recent times, Toyota is a name that is synonymous with econoboxes and workhorse vehicles that can run for a million miles with no hassles whatsoever. But this boring existence of the iconic Japanese brand once had an exciting past. There were Toyotas that set the pulses of enthusiasts racing once they hear its name. Remember the scene in the original Fast and Furious movie in which the late Paul Walker shows up with a totaled Supra and his garage junkie/techie kid goes “2JZ? No s***!”. That’s the sort of respect these Japanese rockets got from the petrolhead lot in those early times.
