Electric Genesis G80 is the brand’s first EV

Electric vehicles are definitely the trend now and all manufacturers are setting their eyes on this growing segment. Genesis, an alien to this market, is not waiting any longer and jumps straight in, with an EV adaptation of their gorgeous Genesis G80 sedan.

Genesis has skipped the hybrid middle-ground and ditched the petrol engine straight away for the electric G80. With well-developed EV technology flowing in from their sister brands Hyundai and Kia, Genesis can surely afford to do so. There is no change in the design of the sedan as it retains most elements from the conventional model. But there are some areas where tweaks are made, including new wheels and an updated front bumper.

The charging technology inside the Genesis G80 is staggering. The sedan features a 350 kW charging capacity, enabling the charging of the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes. With this charge, the Genesis G80 EV can travel up to 500 km in the NEDC cycle, which can drop significantly in the real world. The G80 also features a solar roof that chips whatever it can to improve efficiency.

The juice from the battery flows into two electric motors, with a combined output of 365 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The motors are mounted on the front and rear axles, making the Genesis G80 an all-wheel drive. The front motor can shut down when extra power is not needed, to improve efficiency. The Genesis G80 can sprint from 0 to 100 kph in just over 5 seconds.

It is unknown at this time if the electric G80 will be offered in the Middle East. So far, Hyundai’s only official electric offerings in the UAE have been the Ioniq and the Kia Niro, both of which are pretty much missing from Dubai roads.
